Career Achievements
With awards and accolades too bountiful to properly encapsulate with the lack of space provided, Adeline Gray is certainly the example of a powerhouse in women’s freestyle wrestling. Starting her career early, Gray proved her excellence and natural ability in the sport by participating at the varsity level during her time at Bear Creek High School, where she was trained under the mentorship of Coach Steve Burdick. She soon demonstrated her high potential on the team, where she not only served as captain, but also earned three state championship titles against competition that was mostly boys. As her academic journey continued to prosper, it was not until after her collegiate experience that her journey towards a professional career began to skyrocket. Training alongside her fellow wrestlers at the Olympic Education Center, Gray continued to accelerate in terms of her capabilities, as she made her Olympic debut in competing at the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, before taking home silver in the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. However, this pales in comparison to the entirety of the highlights in her career. As a two-time olympic team member, Gray is a five-time U.S. Open Champion, being a Pan-American Games gold medalist, as well as a three-time Pan American Championships gold medalist, and a two-time U20 world championship medalist, in which she acquired gold. As an abundantly decorated wrestler, Gray has also achieved the staggering number of being a six-time Senior World Championships gold medalist, officially establishing herself as the only wrestler, regardless of any gender, to ever receive such honors. In addition, Gray is an eight-time gold medalist at the World Championship events across U20, and is a whopping nine-time Senior World Championships medalist, making her currently tied for the most medals obtained in U.S. women’s wrestling history.
Her Story
Born on January 15, 1991, Adeline Gray was immediately thrusted upon a wrestling-dominated household. With both sides of her parents emerging from the same background, her father having been a former wrestler in high school, Gray began her endeavors with the sport as early as six. Her uncle, being her head coach, led by example and set foot a precedent of making the fact of treating every wrestler, no matter the race or gender, as equals. Gray was taught to approach the sport of wrestling with a severe attention to the game, as well as dedicating her efforts in putting forth the hard work and discipline in achieving the best outcome. Even during high school, Gray had found herself only competing with boys as her only form of competition. However, she had found a sense of appreciation for her wrestling mates in giving her the necessary respect as an athlete during the foundational years of the sport. Even so, that is not to overstate the struggles she had faced early on. As a young adolescent overcoming the already-difficult social challenges in high school, the additional hurdles wrestling had placed in terms of her physicality had posed as another challenge; as the stereotypes targeted to women who pursued wrestling were a constant projection onto athletes like Gray. Nevertheless, above the doubts and disbelief of which many people had voiced, she still proceeded with her mission in expanding the horizons of her career, as she quickly went onto compete on the international stage, completely silencing critics, while being an inspiration to the younger generation of wrestlers to come.
Her Impact
As a decorated wrestler, the journey and skill of which Adeline Gray has showcased provides a strong and powerful example to young girls and women in owning their strength both physically and mentally. Her challenges and victories in her career has clearly set a standard for girls in exploring new athletics of which have not yet been popularized or catered for broader use. Gray’s narrative in leaping and going all out in dominating a sport that was not quite yet made available for young women like her initiates an instinct for others to break down the barrier of participating in an “unconventional” athletic. Her efforts in spreading body positivity allows and creates a safer space for many young athletes to become more confident in themselves, and to know and trust their decisions in carving a pathway of which that they want to lead in going about the world.
