Her Story
Born in Rockville, Maryland, in 1991, Maroulis started her wrestling endeavors at the age of 8. She then quickly became a rising sensation during her school years, having spent her first three years competing at Magruder High School, where she faced tough competition as the only female wrestler in a male-dominated sport. The advancement in progress was certainly no easy accomplishment for Maroulis. Facing much adversity from both professionals and coaches alike, the landscape for girls to not only participate in, but also win, was slim. However, for Maroulis, this was a poor excuse to give up. Showing determination and grit, her resilience eventually changed how many people had looked at wrestling as only an athletic sport available for males. As a freshman, Maroulis was the first female wrestler to place at the Maryland state wrestling championships and was recognized as the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament; ultimately concluding with 99 career victories. Maroulis then went on to attend Marquette Senior High School in Marquette, Michigan, where she finished high school and then joined the women’s wrestling team in Saint Louis, Missouri. She then transferred into Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, where she was already named a three-time Junior World medalist in 2008, 2010, and 2011. Devoting the utmost efforts in her career, Maroulis works as an ambassador for the USA Women's Wrestling team, and is only one of eight female athletes chosen by the United World Wrestling international to help promote the movement of women in athletics, all the while contributing her love and passion for the sport in opening wrestling clinics for wrestlers of all ages.
Her Impact
Because of her demonstration of success and the shining example that she has set for aspiring athletes, Maroulis’s journey and story have helped pave the way for the next generation of female wrestlers by not only leading with excellence but also helping young women across the nation in empowering them to set foot in wrestling rooms. Her hard work, showcased in her devotion to training, as well as her qualities as an athlete, including her toughness, competitive fire, unbreakable drive, determination, and sincerity, have put her on the pedestal many look up to and follow in pursuit of.
